GIKAS, Thomas

THOMAS GIKAS (Age 94)

On Sunday, January 21, 2018, Thomas Gikas, Tom to his friends, Tommy to his relatives, passed away in his sleep at the Brook Grove Retirement Village in Sandy Spring, MD, following several years of declining health.  He was 94.  He is survived by his beloved wife, Athena (Maggos) Gikas, daughter, Catherine Gikas (Steve Stovall), son, James Gikas (Carol Hacquebord) and granddaughter, Julie A. Hacquebord-Gikas.

Relatives and friends may call at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 701-A Norwood Road, Silver Spring, MD 20905, Saturday, February 3, from 10 to 10:30 a.m., where Funeral Service will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery following funeral.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the AHEPA Educational Foundation.

Tom was born in Walsenburg, CO to a Greek immigrant family, and moved to Los Angeles, CA in the middle of the Great Depression.  He graduated from Huntington Park High School.  Soon after, he was inducted into the US Army.  There he served as an infantryman in battles across France and Germany, being awarded both the Silver and Bronze Stars.  Following the war, he enrolled in and graduated from Georgetown University, School of Foreign Service.  During his college days, while volunteering at the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) office in Washington DC, he met his future bride, Athena M. Gikas.  Upon graduation, Tom took a job with the State Department in post-war Germany.  He was followed to Europe by Athena, and they were married in Paris, France in November 1949.  Soon after in October 1950, their son, James, was born.  Upon their return to Washington DC, their daughter, Catherine, was born in June 1952.  In 1953, Tom and Athena bought a house in the Wheaton-Glenmont area, where they raised their family.  Although they moved to a new house in 1987, they continued to live in the same part of Montgomery County.  Until his retirement in the early 1990s, Tom was employed by the National Academy of Sciences as a business manager, where he eventually managed all the contracts and grants received by the Academy.  He was very active in the Greek community.  For many years, he served on the Board of Directors of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church.  He was also an active member of the AHEPA, serving for many years as an officer of a local DC chapter.  He also initiated a local AHEPA awards banquet for Greek high school scholars and athletes in the DC community.  In addition, he was active in local politics for Maryland’s Democratic party.  He loved his crossword puzzles and wrestling with his children.

On Tuesday, January 23, 2018, of Silver Spring, MD.  Native Washingtonian, daughter of the late William E. Fee and Marie Louise Fee.  Beloved loved wife of 61 years to James A. Young. Loving mother of Linda (David) Dorsey, James (Alyssa) Young, Jr., Catherine (Matthew) Stohlman and Thomas (Suzanne) Young. Sister of Jane Baker and Jean DiPaola.  Also survived by nine grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren,and a great-granddaughter.  Attended St. Thomas the Apostle and Georgetown Visitation Preparatory Schools in Washington, DC.  Graduated Cum Laude Georgetown School of Nursing, founding member of the Georgetown University chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, Nursing Honor Society, and worked with the Visiting Nurse Association, Washington DC, and at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Served as Corporate Training Director at Garfinckel’s F Street Headquarters in Washington, DC.. An avid crafter, who held a supervisory position at Craft Junction of Rockville, MD, and started her own craft business. Dr. Thomas Anthony Strike (Age 89)

On Sunday, January 21, 2018, the Lord took Thomas Anthony Strike of Kensington, MD to his heavenly home. Tom was born in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania to the late Anthony A. and Helen M. Strike. He graduated from Mount Carmel High School and joined the Army at 17, before entering Penn State University where he earned a B.S. degree in Chemistry and Zoology. Tom received his Ph.D. in Physiology with minors in Anatomy and Pharmacology in 1958 from Georgetown University. Shortly after, he married his sweetheart Lynn Ann Morrissey, originally from Cohoes, New York. Tom’s working career spanned 42 years; 16 with Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) and his last 26 with the National Cancer Institute at the National Institute of Health.

Tom was predeceased by his wife of 58 years Lynn, as well as his sister Leona Baski; survived by six children: Anne Carter (Michael), Mary Goldstein (Jay), Kathleen Hayden (Jeffrey), Thomas M. Strike (Sarah), Tim Strike (Niza), and Sara Niemynski (Gregory). He is also survived by 17 grandchildren: Jessica Carter Taglieri (Matt), Christopher Carter (Maureen), Patrick and Kara Carter; Jazzlynn Goldstein; Sharon Hayden Goebeler (Robbie), Matthew Hayden (Gabby), and Laura Hayden; Katelyn, Jordan and Ryan Strike; Noah, Kelley and Stephanie Strike; Brian, Peter and Megan Niemynski; two great-granddaughters Hayden and Cecilia Goebeler; and by many nieces and nephews.

Friends and family may gather at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 9705 Summit Ave., Kensington, MD on Saturday, January 27 beginning at 11 a.m. where Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD.
